Netsuite throws down gauntlet in software showdown

Last week this image did the rounds in the Financial Times and London Metro. With the tagline “all Sage lines terminate here”, Netsuite have thrown down the gauntlet in their bid for a share of Sage’s UK market.

Simple but effective, Netsuite’s angle is this: web-based, software-as-a-service (SaaS) is the way forward. Sage’s offline application is no longer adequate for many fast growing businesses.

Is this fair? We at Peoplevox have built an off-the-shelf integration into Sage 200, this is our experience with the Sage 200 software:

We provide web-based software-as-a-service. Like Netsuite, we believe in cloud-based solutions for eCommerce. Sage is an offline, installed application. This online-offline clash made creating our eCommerce warehouse software integration painful - successful in its execution, but painful in its conception.

For online retailers, we empathise with the frustration of integrating numerous bits of software to streamline processes. If left unsorted, it is your customers that will feel the negative effects. eCommerce is too much of a competitive industry to let your competitor steal away customers because an integration was too difficult to master. Software should be there to support you, not hinder you.

What Sage has over Netsuite is the trust with their partners. The true value of this remains to be seen but no bit of software will serve all purposes for all businesses. Instead, software companies must master their chosen niche and form lasting partnerships with complementary software companies.  

If you are using Sage 200 and Netsuite has got the captain of your brain ship thinking you should switch, here is our advice: nail down your key business objective. Understand the elementary differences between these softwares and the benefits and drawbacks of each. Which support your objectives, which do not? When you know the best of breed partners who will serve your customers’ needs, the logical decision for you will reveal itself.
